Design the stairs yourself – no problem with our beginner-friendly CAD software

The staircase plays an important role in the house, because it serves to transport people from A to B. The requirements are correspondingly high to prevent falls or accidents and to enable safe ascents and descents. If children are in the house or if stairs have to be designed as senior-friendly as possible, even more criteria have to be observed.

With our 3D Hausplaner software you can design the staircase yourself and it up to you that your home is created exactly according to your wishes.

Design the staircase yourself – it depends on the form

A staircase consists of steps, but there are many more subtleties to distinguish. Before you start designing your desired staircase, you must therefore first decide on a form and a construction method. Depending on the construction, the costs can also vary, so just try out with our 3D Hausplaner software which staircase suits best your needs. Within the house, these constructions are especially known and popular:

  • The classic straight staircase: if you want a classic standard model, the straight staircase is perfect for you. The barrel is even, all floors are connected directly to each other. Construction is also easy, but this type of staircase takes up a lot of space in the house.
  • The spindle staircase: a spindle staircase takes its name from the shape – it runs completely round. You will come across stairs like this when you climb a church tower or when you venture down the corridor over a bridge. In the private household, it is mainly used when space needs to be saved. It is less suitable for small children living in the house.
  • The spiral staircase: a classic staircase variant is the spiral staircase, which is also circular, but allows variations in the run. You can also install pedestals on individual storeys. The advantages are in the individuality and on the other hand in the low space consumption.
  • The individual pedestal staircase: most apartment buildings are equipped with pedestal stairs and are also standard in department stores, public authorities and other facilities. This form of staircase consists of straight steps to which a pedestal is attached. This is used to change the running direction. The space required is similar to the straight staircase, but the construction itself is simple.

Our software allows you to create an exact storey plan of your house and transfer it in a 2D model. Now you can install different types of stairs and see in the visualized 3D version which construction suits best to you and your individual requirements.

When designing the staircase yourself, several aspects are important

If you have decided to design your own staircase, you need to consider several factors. Once you have chosen a type of staircase, it is time to plan the required dimensions. Only when the desired dimensions are available can you proceed with the actual designing and the transfer to the 3D model. The conditions in the house are decisive because you have to adapt your staircase to the distance between the individual storeys.

A special feature is the designing of the step height, because here you have to follow legal rules. Stair construction must be carried out in accordance with DIN 18065, below which the approved stair dimensions and the official rules are laid down. There is only one exception in Nordrhein-Westfalen, otherwise the classic staircase rules apply to all German federal states.

You must also comply with DIN 19065 when designing stairs yourself. Free staircases exceeding a height of one metre must be provided with a railing. The height of the railing depends on the type of building, in residential buildings there must be at least 900 cm if the height of the fall is less than 12 metres. Before you start designing your staircase, please check with your building authority about all official regulations.

Special case external staircase: If you want to design an external staircase, a building permit may be required. Details are laid down in legal texts. With a preliminary construction request, you can be sure in advance whether further official consents are required and obtain them before designing if in doubt. Because only if all aspects are taken into account can the self-made stair plan be implemented in practice without any problems.

The right material for the new staircase

Once you have found out the official requirements and decided on a type of staircase, you can already create a preliminary designing with our software. Simply enter all designed dimensions correctly and you will receive a visualized model. Now it comes to the intricacies of the designing and the selection of the desired material.

Stairs in houses are typically made of concrete, but in single-family houses with several storeys, but also in multi-family houses, steel and wood structures are increasingly being used. Decisive is the static, because the staircase must be able to carry bigger loads and must always be secured.

The choice of surface becomes more difficult, because here you have much more choice. Exotic glass stair steps can be visualized with our software as well as classic steel, wood or concrete steps. The advantage for you is that you can get a direct picture of the overall result. Although the plan can also be visualized in front of the inner eye, the 3D model provides even more overview.

The practical application: Design the stairs yourself and integrate sound insulation

Of course, the staircase must visually match your house and fit ideally into the overall picture. Not to be neglected, however, is the practical aspect. They don´t build a staircase to use it as a decoration, but to connect floors. It can be used during the day, but also at night, so it is important that you don´t forget the sound insulation when designing the stairs yourself.

In multi-family houses, it is already required by law to keep noise away from the neighbourhood as far as possible. But even in you own home it is advisable not to do without it. Although there are no official requirements, you should always follow current standards.

DIN 1409 specifies that sound insulation for stairs must limit impact noise to a maximum of 53 dB. For terraced houses, the reduction is even recommended to a maximum of 46 dB. Our software supports you in creating the appropriate sound insulation right away, so that you don´t suddenly have to face increased costs during the execution.
