The legal peculiarities – Garden house design with the authorities

If you want to design your own garden house, you must consider all legal requirements. It is not permitted to build a new house on a plot of land without consultation or building permit. However, if you build it, it is not legal and it may be demolished by the authorities. This isn´t only expensive for you, but often leads to additional fines. Before you plan your garden house, you must obtain a building permit.

Once you have all the official approvals, you can start designing your garden house in 3D. It is crucial that you have a solid ground plan of the property. The size of the garden house shouldn´t only be adapted to the official requirements, but also to the scale. A garden house that is too large can visually reduce a plot of land, while a model that is too small will visually sink on too large an area.

To achieve a consistent overall result, you should therefore consider all the conditions in the garden. Consider also whether you are designing only a garden house or whether further renovations in the garden are desired. If a children´s playground or a pond is to be added later, the choice of the construction site is decisive. With our software, you can already integrate future elements that are not yet available in the garden but are designed by you.

Designing the garden house – foundation is the first step

Before you start designing your garden house, you need a foundation. Even if the garden house is not a residential building, it rarely gets along without a foundation. It is important that you have detailed knowledge of the soil condition of your property.

Depending on the substrate, you can then choose from several types of foundation:

  • The foundation in plate form: if your property has a sandy, soft soil, a foundation plate is the most stable construction. The soil must be compacted beforehand, then a pit is filled with concrete. The garden house is significantly more stable after construction and can also be used for storing heavy equipment. The budget requirement increases with a plate foundation because concrete mixers and machines are needed.
  • Strip foundation with less expenditure: if you take a strip foundation the ground should have stability. However, it is always necessary to compact the soil beforehand. Previous precisely marked out area get covered with stable beams, which are screwed together as a kind of grid. The direct construction of the garden house starts now on this. Take into account that strip foundations are less stable and the garden house is not suitable for storage of heavy machinery.
  • Point foundations rarely used: a point foundation is only suitable for even soil structure. Posts, piles or studs are anchored directly into the ground and serve as a supporting surface for the later garden house. A soil that is too soft would cause your garden house to sink in, so you should have the most accurate knowledge of the soil conditions before deciding on a point foundation.

When designing a garden house also consider the details

Thinking about your future garden house, you may think of a wooden hut, have individual wishes for the shape and quality of the house, but disregard subtleties. Our Hausplaner software helps you to take into account every little detail during the designing process, in order to obtain a realizable plan in the end.

Important points that you must necessarily take into account, in addition to the selection of the foundation are:

  • the selection of a high-quality wood type
  • the integration of windows, ventilation and doors
  • the installation of water pipes for in- and outflow
  • the laying of power lines for electricity

A garden house can be designed in many ways, from a simple hut to a complex wooden house, which is suitable for garden parties, but also occasional overnight stays with the family. Depending on the scope of your wishes, you must consider important points and plan your garden house the way that it can be implemented in the end by your craftsmen 1 to 1.

First the basic structure, then plan the details of the garden house

The first step is the construction of the foundation. You choose the foundation that suits you and decide on the desired design. If you are unsure, you can use our software to select different wall structures and vary the building form. In this way, you can see directly in the live model which building style you like best and can move forward with the designing.

When the basic structure of your house is in place, you must pay attention to the electricity and water supply, if it is desired. If pipes need to be run from the main house, accessibility is an important keyword. It is much more difficult to run a water pipe under an existing garage or carport than over an open area.

Ideally, when designing your garden house, you already consider the need for supply and drainage and select the position based on these criteria. If the garden house isn´t to be supplied with electricity and water because it only serves as a shelter, you can already go to the next step after the foundation and basic framework planning – the garden house design.

Optimize windows and doors – design and furnish your own garden house

Also a garden house needs windows and doors, otherwise they will have to rely on electricity. Our software offers the possibility to consider the influence of sun and shade, so you can provide the optimal lighting conditions. In summer, you can benefit if the windows are placed on the sunny side and you can use the daylight until late in the evening. In this way, the need for electricity is reduced.

However, when designing the roof, you should focus on solid insulation, otherwise the garden house will quickly overheat if you want to use it for personal purposes. With our software, you can try out, which window types, door types and positioning you like best and then design your walk-in 3D model step by step.
